Complaint
A viewer complained the presenter incorrectly claimed Jeremy Corbyn had not fully accepted the EHRC report into antisemitism and the Labour Party. The ECU examined whether the broadcast met the standards for accuracy set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The ECU considered the conversation which gave rise to the presenter’s remarks and concluded it gave a duly accurate account of events. The EHRC report was published on 29 October 2020. That morning, Mr Corbyn posted the statement in question on his Facebook page, referring to it as “My statement following the publication of the EHRC report”. Mr Corbyn’s statement contained reactions, as described by the presenter Jo Coburn, including the words “I do not accept all of its findings” and that “one antisemite is one too many, but the scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media”.
