Complaint
During a phone-in on Islamophobia a contributor, Ajmal Masroor, was asked about the activities of “Islamists” and how they reflect on the Muslim community as a whole. A listener complained his reply was not sufficiently interrogated by the presenter claiming it was because of their friendship. The ECU considered whether the programme met the BBC standards on impartiality.
Outcome
Mr Masroor argued verbal attacks on Islamic groups had the effect of stigmatising the community at large. When Mr Campbell challenged him about the activities of some extremists, Mr Masroor suggested that to cite their behaviour was to risk participating in commentary which he regarded as a smear. The ECU considered the exchange was conducted in good humour and there was no evidence of the presenter pulling his punches. The phone-in was time limited and Mr Campbell allowed an appropriate variety of views to be expressed.
