Complaint
The bulletin included newly-obtained footage of Israeli military action inside the Nasser Hospital in Gaza. A viewer complained that the newsreader had been inaccurate in referring to an “attack” on the hospital and to “violence and destruction” because that was not what the footage showed. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
Viewers would have been able to form their own view of what the footage showed. It was a matter of fact that Israeli troops had shelled the hospital, killing one person and injuring eight others before storming it and ordering a forced evacuation. Taking this together with what was apparent from the footage, the ECU did not consider the newsreader’s words to be inaccurate.
