Julian Assange pleads guilty in court on US Pacific island, bbc.co.uk

Complaint

This article contained the following statement about Julian Assange: In 2010, he faced separate charges of rape and sexual assault in Sweden, which he denied. He spent seven years hiding in Ecuador's London embassy, claiming the Swedish case would lead him to be sent to the US”.  A reader complained this was inaccurate because  Mr Assange had not been formally charged with these offences.  The ECU considered whether the item met the standards of due accuracy set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

The article in its original form was inaccurate in the aspect complained of.  In response to the complaint the article was changed to read In 2010, he was accused of rape and sexual assault in Sweden, which he denied. He spent seven years hiding in Ecuador's London embassy, claiming the Swedish case would lead him to be sent to the US” and an explanatory note attached.  In the ECU’s view this was sufficient to resolve the issue.
