Complaint

A viewer complained that a report which explained how police investigated allegations made by a woman who was subsequently found guilty of perverting the course of justice over multiple false claims of rape and grooming was “completely distorted by the institutionalised BBC feminist bias”.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of impartiality.

Outcome

The ECU noted the complainant had not substantiated his contention that “Falsifying allegations of sexual assault is an out of control epidemic in the UK”.  Irrespective of its validity, however, the ECU saw no reason why the report should have ranged beyond the circumstances of what was widely regarded as a unique case, and no departure from impartiality in not doing so.
