Complaint
A viewer complained that a report of a narrow escape by a mother and child after a car veered off the road and flipped on its side trivialised the incident and would have misled viewers as to its potential gravity. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s standards of accuracy.
Outcome
Whilst the tone of the item reflected the fact that the pedestrians had escaped injury, the ECU took the view that viewers in general would have been in no doubt about the potential gravity of the incident, the danger of which was underlined by a witness who said the mother had been “scared, very scared”.
