Complaint
A listener complained the programme contained a false and misleading statement on the topic of levelling up. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
The complaint concerned a contribution from a caller who said “there is only one remedy for me how to level up…right across the board, and that’s the redistribution of income”. He went on to suggest the national income of the UK should be divided equally between every member of the population, thus providing £35,000 per year to every adult or child, which he maintained could be achieved by a radical readjustment of the tax system. While not necessarily disagreeing with the complainant’s views on the practicality of the caller’s suggestion or the credibility of his figures, the ECU did not consider that listeners would expect contributions to the programme from members of the public to observe the same standards of accuracy as material originated by the BBC, or that the expression of a somewhat unconventional opinion in this context amounted to a breach of the BBC’s editorial standards.
