Appointment of the Chairman of the BBC

Summary of complaint

We’ve received complaints from people unhappy with Richard Sharp's appointment as Chairman of the BBC.

Our response

The BBC plays no role in the recruitment of the BBC Chairman, which is a matter for the UK Government.  Details of members of the Board and the appointments process can be found HERE

On 23 January the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments announced that there would be a review of the competition for the BBC Chair appointment to ensure it was conducted in line with the Governance Code for Public Appointments.

In recognition that the BBC’s relationship with audiences is rooted in trust, the BBC Nominations Committee will also ensure that all the appropriate guidelines regarding conflicts of interest have been followed within the BBC since Richard Sharp joined as Chairman. The Committee will be chaired by the BBC Board’s Senior Independent Director, Sir Nicholas Serota, and the Committee’s conclusions will be published.
